Description

Bryn or Penlan flats is a tall, four-storey, three-window building constructed in the 18th century, built in a Georgian style reflecting the early phases of development within the surrounding estate. Originally used as servant’s quarters, it is now divided into flats. The building is constructed from mortared rubble masonry, with large stones forming the quoins and lintels. It features broad, rectangular stone stacks with dripstones and capping.

The main facade faces west. It presents a three-window range with widely spaced openings. The windows are horned sash windows with slate sills; the lower floors have 16 panes, and the top floor has smaller eight-pane lights set under the eaves. A distinctive feature is the acutely angled northwest corner at the north end of the building, and the north gable has moulded labels positioned for windows on the top three storeys, although no openings were ever created. Access to the flats is through doorways along the rear, eastern wall. The rear elevation includes a mixture of sash and casement windows, along with a tall, fixed light with 24 panes, likely providing illumination for the staircase, located at the far northern end. The top floor openings on this rear elevation also have moulded labels.

The south gable displays dripstones positioned above the roofline of an adjacent cottage range. The cottage is a two-storey, five-window range with a gabled porch housing the entrance, which is offset to the left (north) side. The cottage’s walls are grit rendered, and the slate roof has a tiled ridge. The windows along the cottage range are modern timber casements, with smaller windows at the rear.

The interior was not inspected during the survey in June/July 2003.
