Description

The former schoolroom of Capel Salem is a two-storey building constructed from coursed rubble masonry, featuring a moderately pitched quarry slate roof with an end stone stack and water tabling. The front elevation has four paired windows under the eaves on the first floor, which include shallow upper tilting lights of four panes above eight fixed panes, all with slate sills. The roof extends forward on the extreme right to support a bellcote.

To the left, there are two tall round-arched openings with recessed arch rings, stone voussoirs, stressed keystones, and hoods. These openings are largely blocked on the left by modern toilets, with one featuring a radial fanlight and a rear opening that is partly blocked. The other opening leads to a rectangular passage with a six-panel door that opens into a room on the right, accompanied by a five-pane rectangular fanlight.

On the right side of the front elevation, there are two nine-pane sash windows with shallow upper sashes and stone lintels. A later single-storey outhouse has been added at right angles between these windows, built from rubble masonry with a gabled slate roof, an end stone stack, and slate water tabling. There is a doorway at the left end of this outhouse.

At the rear of the main block, there are two small paned fixed light windows under the eaves. To the left, there are two former doorways, possibly for stables, featuring deep stone lintels. One of these has been fitted with a modern window, while the other has a small paned fixed light window. Long deep stone lintels are present over the rear openings of a former coach house to the right, with the extreme right opening partly blocked by a modern door.
