Description
T.H. Roberts, Ironmonger, is an ambitious three-storey building with a cellar, featuring four window retail premises and a warehouse. It is constructed from snecked masonry with rock-faced freestone dressings and quoins, and has a plinth and a hipped slate roof. The building showcases deep boarded eaves supported by modillions and an eaves band, along with a single stepped stone stack to the left and slate water tabling.
The front façade has three closely spaced Victorian sash windows, which are offset to the right and framed by rusticated architraves. Below, there is a broad three-light shop window, although the blind box is missing. The shopfront is well-designed, featuring a moulded cornice over sunk panelled pilasters, with the centre window being two-light. Above the half-glazed double doors, there is a deep rectangular fanlight, and the shop windows have iron ventilator grills at the tops, similar to the stallrisers. To the left, there is a single tier of Victorian sash windows with rusticated architraves and a cambered arch at the ground floor, along with sill bands and a blocked cellar opening below.
The elevation facing Glyndwr Street has four windows with Victorian sash windows, rusticated architraves, and sill bands, as well as blocked cellar openings. The second bay from the right features a deeper window with flanking slit-like sidelights on the first floor above a projecting door surround. This doorway, offset to the left, has a corniced head with a plain entablature, and there is a heavy panelled door with original furniture.
The rear elevation is made of coursed rubble and includes good cast iron fenestration with small panes and iron cames, featuring rectangular tilting opening lights and alternating stone lintels with segmental arched stone voussoirs.
Inside, the building boasts a fine contemporary interior with moulded panelled counters along both sides of the shop. To the left, there are glazed cabinets that reach the ceiling with corniced tops, and similar detailing is found on the open shelves to the right. The rectangular inner office has full-height partitions with small panes over tall round-arched glazed panels, featuring moulded mullions and etched glass with panelled bases. There is also a smaller office with panelled partitions and a clock located at the right rear of the shop, along with boarded floors.
Overall, T.H. Roberts is a remarkably well-preserved late 19th-century ironmongers with robust architectural detailing and intact internal fittings.
