Description
6 Howe Street is part of a terrace known as Bodlondeb and 1-6 Howe Street in Glasinfryn, which dates back to 1836, as indicated by a slate in the gable. This date is likely accurate, supported by the presence of the row on the Bangor Tithe Map of 1840, where it appears as a series of back-to-back cottages. By the first edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1889, only the top house was shown in this manner. The terrace is one of several in the village, suggesting a notable concentration of workers' housing for a small rural area, possibly due to the existence of at least one textile factory in 1840.
The terrace consists of seven houses arranged at right angles to the road. Its distinctive form features the top house, which faces the road as a wide two-unit gable-entry house, while the others are stepped down behind it, each with a single unit and a double depth plan. This unusual layout may reflect its origins as a back-to-back terrace. The construction is of rubble, rendered on the front and upper gable elevations, with the rear exposed. The houses have slate roofs and brick stacks. The top house has a doorway to the right of the gable and paired six-pane sash windows on each floor. There is a slate dated slab near the gable apex, and the stack runs parallel to the ridge line. The houses behind have doorways to the left and a single window on each floor, primarily featuring four-pane sashes, with some twelve-pane sashes remaining on the rear elevation and some replacement windows. The brick stacks on the gable ends are positioned at right angles to the ridge line.
