Description
This is a terrace of seven houses built in 1836, as indicated by a slate dated 1836 set into the gable. The terrace is located in Glasinfryn and was shown on the Bangor Tithe Map of 1840 as a row of back-to-back cottages, although by 1889 the Ordnance Survey map showed only the top house as such. The unusual concentration of workers’ housing in the village may be linked to the presence of a textile factory in 1840.
The terrace is arranged at right angles to the road, and its design is distinctive. The top house is a wide, gable-entry house with two units facing the road, while the remaining six houses are stepped down behind it, each being a single unit with a double-depth plan. This arrangement may reflect the terrace's earlier design as back-to-back cottages. Construction is of rubble, with the front and upper gable elevations rendered smooth, while the rear is left exposed. The roofs are slate covered, and the houses have brick stacks. The top house features a doorway to the right of the gable, and paired 6-pane sash windows on each floor. A slate dated slab is located near the gable apex, and one stack runs parallel to the ridge line. The remaining houses behind the top one have a doorway to the left, and a single window on each floor, primarily with 4-pane sashes. Some original 12-pane sashes remain in the rear elevations, although some windows have been replaced. Brick stacks are present at right angles to the ridge line on the gable ends. The terrace belongs to a group of seven buildings.
