Description

This is a terrace of seven houses built in 1836, as indicated by a slate date stone in the gable. The terrace is located in Glasinfryn, and its form is distinctive, with the front house facing the road as a wider, two-unit gable-entry dwelling, while the remaining six houses are stepped down behind it, each being a single unit with a double-depth plan. This unusual arrangement may have originated as a back-to-back terrace. The construction is of rubble, rendered on the front and upper gable elevations, with the rear walls left exposed. The roofs are slate-covered, and the stacks are made of brick. The front house has a doorway to the right of the gable and paired six-pane sash windows on each floor. A slate dated slab is positioned towards the gable apex, and one stack runs parallel to the ridge line. The houses behind have doorways to the left and a single window on each floor. Most windows are four-pane sashes, although some original twelve-pane sashes remain in the rear elevations, and some windows have been replaced. Brick stacks are set at right angles to the ridge line on the gable ends. The terrace was shown on the Bangor Tithe Map of 1840 as a row of back-to-back cottages and by 1889, on the Ordnance Survey Map, only the top house was depicted as such. The presence of several similar rows within the small rural settlement suggests an unusual concentration of workers’ housing, potentially linked to the existence of a textile factory in 1840.
