Description
Llwyn Derw is a 2-storey Arts-and-Crafts house built with snecked stone on the lower storey, pebble-dashed and painted white on the upper storey, and featuring timber-framed gables. The steep hipped slate roof has replacement brick stacks with four diagonally set shafts at the front and rear eaves. The relatively modest northeast entrance front includes a 2-storey gabled porch on the right side. The entrance, located in the side wall of the porch, is sheltered by a bracketed canopy and features a fielded-panel door with small-pane glazing. The front wall of the porch has a 2-light window on the lower storey and paired sash windows in the upper storey, consisting of four over single panes. A 2-light window is located on the left side.
The asymmetrical southeast elevation facing the road has an advanced gable on the left with timber framing at the apex, and the roof extends over a set-back kitchen and veranda on the left. To the right of the gable, the roof is hipped over a bay window. The kitchen has double half-glazed doors that open to a recessed veranda wrapping around the rear elevation. The veranda features thin rock-faced monolithic piers and a simple rock-faced balustrade, except on the right side where there is a coursed stone square chamfered pier and a similar respond. The rear southwest elevation has a triple 2-pane sash window in the kitchen.
The right (northwest) side wall faces a steep bank. To the left of center is a large wood mullioned and transomed 3-light stair window. Further right in the lower storey are a 2-pane sash window, a boarded door under a 2-pane overlight, another sash window, and a small-pane window in a lean-to that was formerly a doorway. In the upper storey, there are two pairs of 2-pane sash windows on either side of a single sash window.
Inside, the porch leads into a stair hall with principal rooms on the left side. The open-well stair features tall square newels, simple balusters, and moulded tread ends. The fireplaces in the main rooms on the lower storey are set across the corners, one with an oak fielded-panel surround and the other with freestanding fluted posts, a panelled back, and relief-moulded tiles.
