Description
Discount World, formerly known as Caersalem Chapel, is a mid-Victorian chapel built in 1866 in an eclectic Classical style. It features a striking 5-bay rectangular design and was constructed at a cost of £2,300, with alterations made around 1900. The chapel is made of snecked dressed stone with sandstone detailing and has a medium-pitched slate roof.
The symmetrical facade showcases a large bracketed pediment and a prominent 2-light, round-arched window with a blind oculus and spandrels, all framed within a large round-headed arch that has a simply-moulded entablature, plain projecting key, and pilasters. In front of this pedimented facade, storeyed porches were added around 1900. These porches feature entrances on the inner return walls and have sandstone quoins and twin arched windows, with the far right window now blocked. They also include fluted pilasters, projecting keys, and composite capitals. Above the windows are single elliptical oculi with four projecting keys. The porches have moulded and bracketed cornices topped with balustrades that have bulbous turned balusters and a moulded rail, along with a plain cill course. The same fenestration and balustrading details are repeated on the outer return walls, and the oculi are also present on the inner returns. The porches are capped with slated pyramidal roofs featuring simple lead finials and are connected in the center by a slightly recessed double-arched loggia, which is balustraded similarly and includes moulded voussoirs, projecting keys, and composite capitals atop black marble columns. Access to the chapel is via stepped entrances.
The sides of the building are plain pebble-dashed, with segmental windows on the basement, ground, and first floors that have rendered surrounds, projecting keys, and cill courses. The eastern end features a plain rectangular bay.
Inside, there is a wooden gallery supported by fluted iron columns with stiff-leafed capitals and foliate brackets. The gallery face is adorned with raised and carved panels and columns, along with a dentilated cornice. The ceiling also has a dentilated cornice and is decorated with large, complex plasterwork featuring geometrical and foliate designs.
