Description
The Church of St Maelrhys is a parish church constructed from rubble stone, featuring a single slate roof and a 19th-century west bellcote made of squared stone with a slate-capped gable and a single arched opening. The east gable is coped, and the massive boulder footings suggest that the church has medieval origins, although the west wall appears to have been rebuilt, except for the cornerstones.
The west entrance includes an arched doorway with stone voussoirs and double ledged doors, flanked by narrow arched lights on each side and another light high in the gable. Inside the doorway, there is a passage with doors on the right and left, leading to double doors that open into the nave. The north wall contains a blocked door at the west end, which is roughly pointed with stone voussoirs. The south wall features two 19th-century cross-windows with small panes, one of which has a quarter opening. Additionally, there is another blocked door on the south wall with a segmental head, likely not of medieval origin.
The interior has plastered walls and a 5-bay 19th-century roof supported by pine wishbone trusses. A set-back in the north wall may indicate the original east end of the church. There are two steps leading to the sanctuary, which has plain rails and a crude timber pulpit. The church contains 12 box pews along the sides with panelled doors and a bench at the west end. The north side features eight backless benches linked by a bench along the wall, with five bench-ends inscribed 'Nanhoron'. There are also two box pews that are lower than those on the south side. A medieval font with an irregular octagonal bowl is whitewashed and bears a cross on one face, with a ring mould around the shaft and a splayed base.
