Description
Pen-y-Graig Upper Cottage is a 3-storey building constructed of rubble with slate roofs and rubble gable parapets. It features large end stacks on either side of the main front range, along with an additional stack at the north gable end at the rear, all with plain capping and weather coursing.
The front range has an irregular arrangement of doors and windows on the ground floor, all of which are recessed and fitted with modern plain glazing. The left doorway has been converted into a full-height plain-glazed window, while the right side retains a 15-pane glazed door. There are three additional modern windows on both the first and second floors, with the latter set within rubble gabled dormers. To the east, there is a single-storey rubble lean-to that adjoins a stepped path, and the northeast corner of the main range is rounded. The rear of the building features two similar dormers flanking the first arm of the L-shaped rear projection; both were originally entrances, with the right now a modern window. The left entrance retains original stepped and parapeted access leading to a modern 9-panelled, part-glazed door, which serves as the entrance to Upper Cottage. A passageway beneath this stepped access leads to a small courtyard that is open to the west.
The L-shaped rear range forms Gibraltar Cottage, which is a single storey plus basement. It has three gabled dormers on the east face, with the right dormer serving as an entrance fitted with a recessed, modern part-glazed door. The remaining dormers have modern 4-pane casements, and at ground level, there are two plain windows. Within the courtyard, additional dormers are present on the west face of the L range and at the rear of the main range, with stepped access as previously described. There are also two modern rooflights, and steep worn stone steps lead down to the courtyard beside the west gable end of the rear range.
