Description

This is a mid-19th century vicarage of medium size, built in a simple Tudor style. It is constructed from roughly dressed, snecked slatestone blocks with a renewed slate roof. The bargeboards are modern and do not match the original style. Three chimneys of slatestone ashlar rise from the roof, featuring moulded capping and ceramic pots.

The main part of the house is a double-pile block with a gabled front and a single-storey gabled porch that steps down to the west. A service block and associated ranges are arranged around a small service court to the rear. The front (east) elevation is asymmetrical, with three bays, the left bay having a flush gable. The porch is centrally placed, with the original four-panelled front door, featuring a small rectangular window above, set on the left (east) return. The windows are two-light with moulded wooden mullions, projecting sills, returned labels, and 3-pane glazing to each light.

The rear (south) elevation is almost symmetrical, with a central entrance reached by three steps, leading to a 20th-century glazed door with a rectangular window above. Similar two-light windows are found on both floors, with a three-light window on the ground floor to the right. The east side has two bays; the left bay is gabled and slightly advanced, featuring a two-storey canted bay in painted stone. It has three-light transmullioned windows on both floors, with single-light returns. The quoins project irregularly, and there are bands for sills and cornices, along with decorative quatrefoil bosses applied between the floors. The right bay has a three-light and a two-light window on the ground and first floors respectively, with labels above the windows.

The single-storey service block is set to the left of the main elevation, slightly set back. It has a modern boarded door and a uPVC window. The block faces a small concreted service yard enclosed by a high rubble screen wall with a boarded entrance door. A low storage range of rubble and slate has three boarded doors on the north side, while at a right angle to the left (west) is a brewhouse block with a higher roof and a two-stage chimney similar to the others. This block has a boarded door on its inner return and a nine-pane window with a central opening casement on the south gable. A lower store block projects from this gable end, with three boarded doors; the door at the end (left) is beyond a short linking wall connecting it to the main service range.

Plain wrought iron gates with spear-headed finials are set back to the right (north) of the service court. They open onto a short drive leading to the former coach-house.

Inside, the period features are largely intact. A central, axial hall has a single-flight pine staircase with square newels, acorn finials, turned balusters, and a moulded rail. The main rooms feature four-panelled doors, panelled reveals with moulded architraves, and simple plaster cornicing.
