Description

Penlan Fawr Public House is a two-storey building that features 19th-century alterations, including new windows and raised eaves. The front has three bays, with a modern rendered finish and a notably prominent two-storey gabled porch at the center, which extends the full width of the pavement. There is one window on either side of the porch, and the building has a plinth. The slate roof has metal sprockets at the eaves and rendered rubble chimney stacks at both ends, including one on the slightly lower porch roof. The first floor has small pane sash windows, while the ground floor features leaded-glazed sash bar windows. The porch displays imitation half-timbering painted on the upper parts of the side walls, with a broad square-headed opening at the front flanked by engaged octagonal piers, likely from the 19th century. There is also a segmental-headed opening on the left side that is probably original. The rear of the building is limewashed and has modern extensions attached.

Inside, the ground floor has stone flagged floors and large stop-chamfered beams and joists. The right gable contains a deep fireplace with a similarly detailed cambered lintel. The roof features contemporary trusses, with some collars removed to create attic space. There is close studding in the partition wall next to the attic staircase, and metal pegged purlins, with secondary purlins added when the eaves were raised.
