Description
Capel Newydd is a Grade I listed chapel built from rubble stone, featuring a steep roof covered with small slates and stone gable copings. This long, single-storey structure has a barn-like appearance, with an off-centre northern front that includes a pair of 9-pane horizontal-sliding casement windows beneath a catslide roof. There are two plank doors: one located at the left end and the other further in from the right end. The west end has a horizontal sliding casement window with two 12-pane lights, while the southern rear features a central 16-pane light and a casement to the right with two 8-pane lights. A 12-pane sash window is positioned left of centre on the left end, and all windows have stone slab lintels.
Inside, the chapel boasts an exceptional interior with whitewashed low plastered walls, a beaten earth floor, and an open roof supported by five pine pegged collar trusses. The seating arrangement includes two rows of fielded-panelled box pews with doors, organized around an axial passage. The west end features three stepped pews facing down the length of the chapel, consisting of both double and single blocks with a passage between them at the northern end. The long row along the rear wall is divided into two blocks, with one section facing west and the other east, and a larger pew in between with benches on three sides. The front wall contains a plain square pulpit set in a window recess, which has curved angles, a four-panel front, and two-panel sides, with a door on the right side. A projecting book-rest with candle-holders is included, along with a bench seat that has a boarded back and steps to the right. At ground level in front of the pulpit is a panelled enclosure with bench seats and a table. To the left is a large box pew, and to the right are four box pews, the last of which has opposed benches. Additionally, there are two simple turned-wood candelabra on pulleys.
