Description
Pont Llanystumdwy is a bridge built of rubble stonework. It features two segmental arches made with radial stones that are recessed under a regulating course, with flush spandrels and a parapet. These arches are supported by a substantial water pier that has a high rounded cutwater on the upstream side and a low cutwater on the downstream side. At the northern end, there is a smaller segmental flood arch, constructed in a similar manner and likely to the same radius, along with a square culvert, probably for a former mill stream. A similar filled arch may exist at the southern end. The upstream cutwater has been modified to support a concrete pedestrian walkway with steel railings. The main arches span approximately 10 meters, with the crown rising 3.75 meters above the river. The original bridge was 2.8 meters wide and was widened by 1.8 meters in 1780. The flush coped parapets, which are 40 centimeters thick, once displayed inscriptions from 1745, WWA 1859, and D.DLL/A 12/1859, but these are no longer visible. The current carriageway measures 4 meters in width.
