Description

The outbuildings at Plas Newydd are an L-shaped group of two-storey structures designed in the Gothic style. The main range, which was formerly used as stables, is located to the southeast. Attached at right angles to the northwest is a slightly lower range that served as a kitchen, connected by a single-storey link that was once a wash-house. This link leads to a short gabled range that functioned as a dairy, projecting towards the main house. Beyond this is a short section of screen wall featuring a wide Tudor arch and a square pier to the left, topped with a pyramidal capping.

The buildings are constructed from irregularly coursed rubblestone, with extensive harling on the rear of the short gabled range. They have slate roofs with slate-coped verges and tall, mainly integral end stacks that feature slate-stone drips. The stack on the lower range is stepped, massive, and external, although it now has a single-storey link attached.

On the courtyard side, the main range has two gabled dormers that break the eaves, a wide segmental-pointed archway on the right, and a narrower pointed arch to the left, both adorned with voussoirs. The lower range features a similar dormer on the left and a lean-to in front with six steeply pointed openings; three on the left are open while the right side has 20th-century windows flanking a boarded door. The single-storey link has three pointed openings, while the short gabled range includes a three-light mullioned and transomed window on the first floor, positioned directly above a steeply pointed doorway with voussoirs. An integral stack appears to be a dummy with an arched opening beneath its capping, and there are gabled dormers on the returns, with the left return also featuring a three-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor.

The rear of this range has a three-light mullioned and transomed window on each floor, the link has three small windows on its back wall, and similar windows are found on the back wall of the lower range. All windows, including those on the courtyard elevation, have leaded lights. The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey.
