Description

Highgate is a house constructed from river boulders, which was remodeled around 1810 to 1820. During this remodeling, it was raised to two storeys and faced with roughly coursed galletted rubble. The original grouted slate roof was replaced with slate in the 1980s. The front of the house features two storeys and two bays, with a central framed and boarded door and 16-pane sash windows on both floors, although the doors and windows have been renewed. Between the upper windows, there is a painted wooden trade sign that reads "RICHARD LLOYD / GWNEUTHURWR." Below this, a recent slate panel identifies the building as Cartref David Lloyd George, which was occupied from 1864 to 1880. The rear of the house clearly shows evidence of the two construction phases, and it has gable stacks.

To the left of the main house is a single-storey cobbler's shop, which has a similar boarded door and a large 18-pane shop window, along with a low gable end stack.

Inside, the main living room is located to the left of the door and features a slate floor and a Coalbrookdale range in the stack. Opposite the front door is the stairway, which has a stick baluster rail. To the right of the door is a parlour that retains its original iron fireplace and has a boarded partition that separates it from a service room at the rear. The upper floor rooms have matchboarded ceilings, partitions, and doors, with a fireplace in the eastern bedroom.

The workshop is open to the roof and includes a large stone stack and firebeam. The central truss has bolted collars, one of which is re-used, and there are two tiers of purlins. The inner lintels over the openings are made from round pole timbers. At the time of inspection, the building was undergoing refurbishment.
