Description
Capel Bethlehem is a chapel built in a simple Italianate style, with its gable end facing the street and a Sunday School/vestry located at the rear. The building features rendered rubblestone and slate-hung walls on the left side, topped with slate roofs. The pedimented gable end, which has a symmetrical arrangement of three bays, includes a central rusticated round-headed arch that contains a small four-light round-arched window with a moulded surround. This window is accented by a keystone that breaks the entablature and cornice of the outer bays. Above the window is an oval panel inscribed "BETHLEHEM/ Rebuilt/ 1860". The outer bays are flanked by plain pilasters that support the entablature and feature tall round-headed windows with eight panes, moulded surrounds, keystones, and slate cills. The central entrance has a doorcase with a bracketed flat hood and ribbed double doors. Each return of the chapel has three tall round-headed windows similar to those on the front, but without surrounds.
The lower and set-back Sunday School has two tall segmental-headed windows on its end wall, which also features a rendered brick integral stack with paired and rebated shafts and stepped capping. A lean-to on the left wall has boarded double doors, above which is a slate plaque (possibly reset) inscribed "SCHOOL-ROOM ERECTED/ BURIAL GROUND ENLARGED A.D. 1892,/ Lease granted/ by the Right HON/ GEORGE SHOLTO GORDON./ LORD PENRHYN."
Inside, the mid-19th century interior is simple, with a plain flat ceiling (the central rose is missing) and timber boarding on the ribbed sides, which include diagonal-shaped ventilators in the corners. The walls are plastered, and the floor is slightly raking with numbered box pews. The simple set fawr features a round-headed pilastered arch flanked by internal windows that match those on the external long walls, leading to the Sunday School, which is accessed by panelled doors located in the corners. An internal lobby at the opposite end includes a glass panel in the centre, above which hangs a clock dated 1856 by J Griffiths of Bethesda. The Sunday School features boarded dado panelling and a Victorian slate fireplace with a bracketed mantelshelf.
