Description
The Caernarfon Royal Town Conservative Club is a three-story building dating from 1886, although it was established in 1871. It has a simple classical design, presenting four bays to High Street and five bays to Market Street. The upper stories are roughcast, topped with a slate roof and roughcast stacks.
The lower story originally housed a market hall and is constructed of coursed squared rubble with segmental arched openings. These arches have voussoirs to Market Street, and similar arches repaired with scribed render to High Street. Originally open with iron gates (one of which remains inside), the openings have been infilled with later 20th-century details. An eroded impost band is largely missing, but is better preserved on the right-hand side of the Market Street elevation and wraps around the rear gable end. The High Street elevation includes a first-floor sill band with four replaced windows. The taller upper story is treated as an open pediment. Pilasters to the outer bays support an entablature, which continues as an eaves cornice on the Market Street elevation. These pilasters are rusticated below a string course, becoming Tuscan pilasters above, framing horned sash windows with six panes over two, and shallow sinuous aprons. The pediment incorporates a roundel displaying 'AD 1886' in raised lettering above an inscription reading 'Working-men's Conservative Club' in raised lettering. Below the string course, the central bays have small windows with pedimented architraves; the left-hand window is blocked, and the right-hand retains vents.
The Market Street elevation features two replaced windows on the left side of the middle story, but otherwise has horned sash windows with six panes over two. An inscription band between the middle and upper floors reads 'Estd 1871 Conservative Club Rebuilt 1886' in raised lettering. The upper story has horned sash windows with six panes over two, and a moulded eaves cornice. The rear gable end, adjoining 3 Market Street, has an external stack. Above the stack, the middle story is of rubble stone, while the upper story is brick.
Within the lower story of the former market hall are cast iron posts, polygonal in the lower portion and round above, incorporating slots for fixing bars used to hang meat.
