Description
The Lewis Rogers Almshouses are an early 17th century range of tenements, originally consisting of ten dwellings but now comprising five. They were built in 1620 according to the will of Lewis Rogers. The building is a single-storey, linear structure that is symmetrically planned, featuring an advanced central gabled porch and gabled end projections. It is constructed from local rubble limestone masonry, which is limewashed, and has sandstone dressings. The roof is slate with stone ridge tiles, and there are square squat chimneys with dripstones and capping.
The advanced gabled center includes a rounded doorway that has a keystone shaped like a shield. Above the doorway is a weathered sunken panel displaying the date and initials: I P H S / 1620. The remaining entrances feature shallow 4-centred arches, with the panels above them bearing the initials LR. The windows along the main elevation and each return are chamfered mullion windows, each containing two leaded lights, while the windows on the rear elevation are modern.
The central tenement in the row has a two-window range, with windows flanking the entrance doorway set within the advanced central porch. The weathered chamfered doorway features a shield as the keystone, and above it is a weathered tablet displaying the initials and date: I P H S / 1620. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
