Description
Lewis Rogers Almshouses are an early 17th century range of tenements, originally consisting of 10 dwellings but now comprising 5. They were built in 1620 under the will of Lewis Rogers. The structure is a single-storey linear range, symmetrically planned, featuring an advanced central gabled porch and gabled end projections. It is constructed from local rubble limestone masonry that has been limewashed, with sandstone dressings, and has a slate roof with stone ridge tiles. The building includes square squat chimneys with dripstones and capping.
The central gabled section has a rounded doorway with a keystone shaped like a shield, above which is a weathered sunken panel displaying the date and initials: I P H S / 1620. The remaining entrances feature shallow 4-centred arches, with those flanking the main entrance having panels above that bear the initials LR. The windows along the principal elevation and each return are chamfered mullion windows, each containing 2 leaded lights, while the windows on the rear elevation are modern.
The second tenement from the end of the row is recessed behind the advanced wings and has a 2-window range with a central doorway. Above this doorway is a tablet displaying the initials L R. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
