Description
Lewis Rogers Almshouses is an early 17th century range of tenements, originally consisting of ten dwellings but now comprising five. Built in 1620 under the will of Lewis Rogers, this single-storey linear building is symmetrically planned with an advanced central gabled porch and gabled end projections. It is constructed from local rubble limestone masonry, which is limewashed, and features sandstone dressings. The slate roof has stone ridge tiles, and there are square squat chimneys with dripstones and capping.
The central gabled section has a rounded doorway with a keystone shaped like a shield. Above the doorway is a weathered sunken panel displaying the date and initials: I P H S / 1620. The remaining entrances feature shallow 4-centred arches, with those flanking the main entrance having panels above that bear the initials LR. The windows on the main elevation and each return are chamfered mullion windows, each containing two leaded lights, while the windows on the rear elevation are modern.
The second tenement in the row of five is recessed behind the advanced wings and has a two-window range with a central doorway. Above this doorway is a tablet that bears the initials L R. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
