Description
Lewis Rogers Almshouses are an early 17th century range of tenements, originally consisting of ten dwellings but now accommodating five. Built in 1620 under the will of Lewis Rogers, this single-storey structure is symmetrically planned with an advanced central gabled porch and gabled end projections. The building is constructed from local rubble limestone masonry, which has been limewashed, and features sandstone dressings. It has a slate roof with stone ridge tiles and square squat chimneys with dripstones and capping.
The central gabled section includes a rounded doorway with a keystone shaped like a shield, above which is a weathered sunken panel displaying the date and initials: I P H S / 1620. The remaining entrances feature shallow 4-centred arches, with the panels above the flanking entrances bearing the initials LR. The windows along the main elevation and each return are chamfered mullion windows, each containing two leaded lights, while the windows on the rear elevation are modern.
The northernmost tenement, located at the right end and within the advanced end wing, has mullioned windows in each gable, a circular tablet stone above the window in the advanced wing, and the doorway is positioned to the left. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
