Description

The former police station is a two-storey building dating from the 19th century, featuring a single window range and a lean-to porch on the left side, along with a two-storey extension at the rear. It is situated next to a courthouse on the right. The building has a square plan and is constructed with rendered and painted limestone walls, accented by stressed limestone quoins, architraves, and a plinth. The hipped roof is covered with slate.

The porch on the left has a hipped lean-to roof that creates a continuous outshut, with a square-headed doorway leading to a recessed boarded door, which is adorned with limestone dressings and an eaves cornice. The front of the building features a paired 4-pane recessed sash window on the ground floor, with a single 4-pane sash window above it. Originally, the windows were barred. On the first floor, there is a small fixed light with a single iron bar on the left side. The left side of the outshut has two recessed 4-pane sash windows at either end, with the one at the rear being larger. The upper storey of the extension includes a single 4-pane sash window.

Internally, the building has been altered but still retains much of its original layout. The main door opens into a slab-paved passage in the outshut, with an office to the right in the front room and two cells located at the rear. There is a blocked doorway leading to the cells. The interior walls of the passage to the cells are made of brick, and the ceilings are covered with large slate slabs. The cell doors feature single-piece stone jambs and lintels, with original heavy doors made of thick boards encased in iron sheeting on the cellward side, equipped with a single large bolt and a view hole. Each cell has fixed metal frame, barred windows at the rear. The upper storey room at the back of the extension has a cast iron fireplace set into a decorative moulded fire surround.
