Description
The remains of a monastic settlement include an outer boundary wall and the foundations of three or four rectangular cells to the northwest. The enclosure is roughly oblong, divided into two compounds by a single wall offset to the northeast end. Within the southwest compound are the remains of a 12th-century church building, of which only the central tower remains. To the west of the tower are the foundations of the nave, with parts of the south wall now incorporated into a late 19th-century cottage, which is built over the site of a south transept. To the east is a late 19th-century building over the site of the chancel, which was excavated in 1896.
The central 12th-century tower has two stages and a squat pyramidal roof, constructed from local rubble masonry. On the east wall, the roofline of the early chancel is visible, with that of the 13th century above it. The crossing features original round-arched doorways on the east and west walls, although the west doorway is now filled in. Above the center of the east doorway, a Roman box-tile is built in. To the south, there is an opening with a roughly constructed semi-circular arch cutting through the reveals of a narrow round-headed window; this arch provided access to the south transept, which is now occupied by a small cottage. The upper stage of the tower is distinguished by a plain projecting string course and has original round-headed windows on each wall; those on the south and west sides have two lights, although the shafts are missing.
