Description
Trwyn Du, or Black Point, Lighthouse is a Grade II* listed building constructed of ashlar, painted in broad bands of black and white. The lighthouse features a circular tower that stands 96 feet high (29.26 meters) on a stepped base, which is stepped in height at the halfway point and topped with a crenellated parapet that is corbelled out. It has a cast iron lantern with a conical roof, surmounted by a ball finial that carries an arrow weather vane.
The doorway is located in the lower stage above the stepped plinth, with the Trinity House arms in relief above it, and small windows aligned with the doorway in the upper stages, which also feature other intermittent windows. All windows are small-paned sashes, and the openings were apparently originally triple glazed. The lantern has a grid of glazing bars, which are obscured on the landward side. A fog warning bell is suspended from the parapet, and the words 'No Passage Landward' are painted in large letters facing either end of the strait.
The basement in the stepped plinth of the tower contains water tanks designed to collect rainwater gathered from the roof. The ground floor includes a store room with a shallow domed ceiling and an enclosed stone stair that winds against the external walls. The first upper level features a former keeper's living room with a built-in dresser, a cast iron range with enriched ironwork, a pump, and a sink. Each of the two levels above has single rooms that retain small decorated cast-iron fireplaces. The original curved panelled doors are preserved throughout the building. At the top level below the lantern, there is a service room with an inscribed stone that reads, 'Except the lord build the house....Psalm MCXXVII', and a cast iron baluster leading to the stairway to the lantern. The lighthouse is equipped with a fixed lens of first order catadioptric type, which is supported on a cast-iron platform that carries the braced cast-iron base of the optic.
