Description
The Holy Well and Cell is a Grade I listed structure featuring sub rectangular limestone foundations of a monk's cell that rise to about 0.5 meters in height. To the northeast of the cell, there is an ancient well, which now has a rectangular flagged forecourt surrounded by rough limestone walling and crude stone benches along the east and west sides. Above the well, there is a small building made of red brick and limestone, which is built into the cliff face to the west. This building has a shallow gabled roof and a single doorway that is offset to the west, along with a narrow vent slit to the east. The lower part of the wall is made of stone and is slightly battered, while the brickwork is weathered, with some remnants of the original render still visible.
Inside, the walls are rendered, and the open doorway leads into a rectangular chamber that contains a rectangular basin for the well set into the flagged stone floor. There are crude flagstone benches along the north and east walls, and rectangular recesses in the walls above. One of these recesses is said to have been partly blocked by a slate slab that featured a coronet above the initials and date B / R B 1710, although this slab is no longer present.
