Description
This is an ornamental gate and small booking office, likely dating from the 18th century. The gatehouse is a single-storey square structure with a chimney breast projecting to the rear and a pyramidal slate roof, featuring a wooden eaves cornice supported by brackets. The walls are constructed of random rubble masonry with limestone dressings and a limestone plinth. The front of the gatehouse has a square-headed doorway on the left and a recessed square-headed window on the right. Single square-headed recessed windows are located on the sides. The gates are hung on either side of two decorative cast-iron gateposts with a moulded frieze cornice and beading in chamfered angles. These gateposts are topped with urn-like finials, which formerly held lamps. Two large double gates have a curved head rail descending to the centre, and smaller pedestrian gates are positioned on either side with a curved head rail descending to the sides. These gates feature vertical barbed rails interspersed with curvilinear rails linking head and ascending bracing rails; lower sections have geometric bracing and circular detailing below the dog rail. To the right of the gates is a third stone pier, which is now partially integrated into a wall.
