Description
Cae Hen is a single-story, two-unit cottage dating from the 18th century. The cottage is constructed of stone with roughcast rendered elevations. The roof is covered in small, old slates with a brick coping. The original cottage is marked by a massive square stack, while a rendered rectangular gable stack is located on the right (north) side, featuring a dripstone and capping.
The cottage faces east with a boarded door and rectangular fanlight offset to the left, alongside a single window to the left and two windows to the right. All of the windows are four-pane horned sash windows. At the rear of the cottage, two similar windows are visible on the left end, and a small sash window is found within a partially blocked doorway on the right.
A brick-built lean-to kitchen addition, set on boulder foundations and with a corrugated iron roof, extends to the right (north) side. This addition contains a boarded door, a fixed window in the north wall, and a modern top-hung casement window in the west wall. A further brick-built lean-to, also with a corrugated iron roof and a boarded door, is located at the left end of the range, and has a single-pane casement window in the north gable apex.
At the south end of the cottage, against the wall of the former cowhouse, stands a low, rubble stone cowhouse with a grouted slate roof. It has a doorway at the left end and a widened doorway on the right, incorporating an inserted window to its left.
The interior was not inspected during the survey.
