Description

Bangor Pier is a Grade II* listed structure and measures 1550 feet long, making it the longest surviving pier in Wales. The pier features largely original steel girders and cast iron columns that support an extensively rebuilt 24-foot wide timber planked deck, along with kiosks and pavilions. Access to the pier is through ornate wrought iron gates adorned with fleurons and barley twist uprights, set between square openwork gate piers topped with lanterns. These gates are flanked by octagonal kiosks that have onion domed roofs and Indian style trefoil headed openings, with similar smaller gates located beyond them. The deck is lined with cast iron lamp standards and full-length seating on either side. The pier has various projections, featuring polygonal timber kiosks with mostly tent-like roofs. At the northwest end, there is a 14-sided timber pavilion with a two-stage pyramidal roof. An iron staircase at the end, consisting of six levels of platforms, led to the former floating pontoon.
