Description

Mumbles Pier is a 255-meter long structure built on a sub-structure of cast-iron piles. The deck, originally supported by steel-framed lattice girders, is now carried by curved plate girders. The deck is covered with planks and features a cast iron parapet with open foliage panels. There are three refuges on each side, with the larger pair at the seaward end that originally housed pavilions. At the seaward end, the pier widens, which originally included a bandstand in the center, and has benches around the edges, with backs adorned by cast iron intertwined dolphins. In the center, there is a row of iron fluted gas lamps cast by Revo of Tipton. On the south side of the entrance, the parapet continues on concrete posts and ends with concrete steps leading to the foreshore. At the seaward end, there is a lower landing stage for pleasure steamers, which stands on timber posts and was rebuilt in 1956. Midway along the north side of the pier, there is a lattice girder walkway leading to the old lifeboat station.
