Description

The Transporter Bridge, which includes the east and west anchor chambers, is a Grade I listed structure. It features two towers, each composed of two elliptical lattice-girder pylons that support a high-level main boom. This boom operates a trolley, moved by a continuous cable powered by two 35 horsepower direct current electric motors located in a cabin on the east side of the river. The gondola, which is suspended by cables from the trolley, is supported by the suspension bridge principle, utilizing oblique stay cables attached to the pylons and catenary cables anchored in chambers on either side of the river.

Pedestrian access to the upper level is provided by stairs on the northeast and southwest pylons. The towers are pin-jointed to bearings that rest on bell-shaped masonry piers, with four piers supporting each tower. On the east side, there is a winding house elevated above the roadway on steel girders, featuring five windows and walls made of steel and wooden boarding, topped with a slate roof that has iron cresting and finials. A wooden platform with iron gates, railings, and a turnstile is located on the west side, with similar iron gates, railings, and a turnstile on the west bank.

The gondola is suspended from cables and has gates on both the east and west sides. On the north and south sides of the gondola, there are shelters constructed from steel girders and mesh, with wooden handrails and roofs featuring zig-zag valences. Above the shelter on the north side is an octagonal operator's cabin topped with a pagoda roof.

Approximately 140 meters away from the bridge on each bank are the anchor chambers where the main cables of the bridge are secured. These chambers are built from brown rock-faced stone and include later additions.
