Description

Alexandria Methodist Church, built by Malcolm Stark between 1877 and 1878, is a simple gabled rectangular-plan church constructed from stugged squared and snecked red sandstone, featuring painted ashlar margins and dressing, a base course, a string course, painted quoins, and harled and painted side elevations.

The south elevation includes a shallow gabled porch topped with an arrowhead finial, a pointed-arch doorway, and an ecclesiastical pattern of windows in the gablehead, with moulding around the broad pointed arch and a two-leaf boarded door. Above, there is a pointed window with leaded glass. The west elevation features a four-bay chancel with narrow, deep-set small pointed arch windows and a vestry at the rear with a piend roof.

The church has a steeply pitched grey slate roof with ashlar coping at the skews, terracotta ridging, and two lucarne lead ventilation openings in the roof.

Inside, as seen in 2007, the original decorative scheme remains largely intact, with timber pews and a decorative timber pulpit and chair featuring a quatrefoil style design. The open roof timbers are believed to be in situ above a later low false ceiling.

The church is complemented by square gatepiers with pyramidal caps and ball finials, a sandstone wall with ashlar coping, and plain cast-iron railings.
