Description

The building is a schoolhouse located at Dalmonach Works on Main Street in Bonhill, dating from around 1835. It is a two-storey, three-bay terraced house with a tower and features Gothic detailing in the schoolroom, which also served as a workshop. The structure is made of droved, squared, and snecked red sandstone rubble, accented with ashlar margins, and has an eaves band.

On the main elevation, the house at numbers 120-122 is symmetrical with two storeys and three bays. It has a curved rubble forestair leading to a modern door at the centre of the first floor, with a blocked fanlight above and flanking windows. The ground floor features a central door under the forestair and flanking windows, which have been replaced with modern windows. To the outer left, there is a rubble-coped enclosure, and a raggle indicates the former presence of a single-storey structure adjoining the gable on the end wall.

Adjoining to the right is the former schoolroom, which is slightly advanced from the main house. It has four pointed arched bays symmetrically arranged, with a fifth pointed arch door to the outer left. The margins are droved, but all windows are now blocked, and there is a boarded door with a blocked fanlight.

The house features modern timber top-hopper windows, while the workshop has blocked windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has broad industrial brick chimneys with coped apex stacks and octagonal cans. There is a blocked rooflight on the workshop ridge, an octagonal louvred metal ventilation chimney at the centre, and a small red sandstone apex stack on the outer apex.
