Description

Stables Cottage, located on the Tullichewan Estate, is an early 19th-century U-plan building that was originally designed as stables and has since been converted into a residential property. The structure features a castellated Gothick style, constructed with bull-faced ashlar and painted rubble wings.

The long, near-symmetrical elevation includes a slightly advanced entrance block at the center, which has a segmental arch and a broad Y-traceried tripartite window above. The gable is crenellated, and there are squat terminal turrets along with an ashlar, arcaded, and crenellated bellcote or lantern at the apex. Flanking the entrance are lower three-bay wings that each have terminal square towers on the outer left and right sides. The right wing has a crenellated parapet, three arrowslits at the upper stage, and a pointed arch window at the center ground. The left wing has had its parapet removed and features bipartite arrowslits at the upper stage, along with a modern window under the eaves (the arrowslit is blocked). This wing also has a square tower with a pointed lancet at the center and machicolated crenellation.

The east wing, made of painted rubble, has been poorly converted for residential use, with arches infilled as windows on the ground floor and small windows symmetrically placed at the upper level, along with modern windows. The west wing features modern doors and windows.

The building has modern plate glass top-hopper windows and is topped with a grey slate roof, which has lead flashings. In the right wing, the slate has been removed, exposing the sarking underneath.
