Description
North Lodge, built in the early 19th century by Robert Lugar, originally served as a lodge to Tullichewan Castle and leads to the former walled garden. It is a single-storey cottage in the Picturesque style, with later alterations and additions. The lodge is faced in painted pebbledash. The main, east, elevation features a bowed front that faces west, and a shallow trellised verandah that curves around the original cottage’s bay. A door and window are situated centrally to the left, with a projecting bay to the right containing a window with a Tudor hoodmould. A window is also present at the centre of the bowed left return. A piend-roofed addition has been added to the outer right, and a modern wing extends from the rear. The windows are modern top-hopper designs, set within a grey slate roof that is piended at the east end and bowed at the west. A tall, corniced stack rises from the centre ridge, topped with octagonal cans.
The boundary wall and gatepiers are constructed of painted sandstone. Sturdy, gothic gatepiers are gabletted with moulded caps, and support central gates flanked by pedestrian gatepiers. A curved quadrant wall is topped with moulded, gabletted coping, with paired blind arrowslits punctuating its face. The other original lodges and the stables cottage at Tullichewan Castle are listed separately. Ordnance Survey first edition maps from 1865 show the lodge and its setting.
