Description
Garden House Steading is an early 19th-century range of dairy outbuildings designed in a rough U-plan. The main structure includes a long rectangular mill building aligned east to west, flanked by two gabled ranges aligned north to south. The buildings are constructed of rubble, with some harling.
The mill features rubble walls with ashlar margins and dressings, and has chamfered reveals along with a cavetto eaves cornice. The south elevation is a symmetrical, three-bay, three-storey block with three doors at ground level, a broad hoist door at the center of the first floor, and a boarded wooden door. Narrow ventilation slits are symmetrically placed on the first and upper floors. The north elevation has two openings at ground level on the outer left and right; the left opening, a former door, is blocked and converted to a barred window, while the right retains a door. There is also a broad hoist door at the center of the first floor and ventilation slits symmetrically arranged.
The west gable is harled and features two windows at ground level, with ventilation slits regularly arranged above and a single ventilation slit in the gablehead. The east gable is made of rubble with harl-pointing, containing two windows at ground level and regularly arranged ventilation slits at the upper stages. The interior is made of harled rubble with no fittings and is currently used as a store. The west gable has four-pane timber sash and case windows, while the remaining windows are broken or barred. The roof is modern and made of corrugated iron.
The outbuildings consist of two single-storey gabled ranges located immediately to the south of the mill, forming the U-plan. They are built of rubble, partly harled, with ashlar margins and dressings, and stugged red sandstone margins, featuring eaves moulding.
The east range's south elevation has a blank gable with an ashlar chevron in the gablehead. The north elevation includes a gable with a boarded hoist door at the center and a lean-to block to the left with a broad door. The west elevation has three doors symmetrically arranged, while the east elevation features lean-to storage bays.
The west range serves as a domestic block. Its south elevation has a blank gable with the chevron obscured in the gablehead. The east elevation includes a lean-to porch on the outer right, with flanking windows to the left. The west elevation has three windows arranged symmetrically.
