Ardvorlich Stables And Farm

Ardvorlich Farm comprises a group of formal farm buildings dating primarily to the 19th century and forming an integral part of the Ardvorlich Estate. The principal stable and barn is of particular architectural and layout interest.

The main building likely dates to the mid-19th century. It is a two-storey, piend-roofed block built into a slope and containing stables, a hay loft, cart sheds, and other accommodation. Access is at a lower level to the front (north), leading to a cobbled yard. The north elevation features two central segmental cart-arches, two single doors, and irregular fenestration. The ground rises to the rear, supported by a retaining wall, with a small passage running behind the building. Two bridges span this passage, providing access to the hay loft on the upper floor through two single doors and a large, full-height opening. The interior of the stables is timber-boarded. A substantial stack on the east side suggests a former bothy may have been incorporated.

To the north of the main block is a smaller, single-storey, rubble L-plan block that opens onto a cobbled yard, now used for hay storage. The western range of this block appears to have been built in the later 19th century as one of a pair of parallel buildings. The eastern block was subsequently demolished, and the north range constructed to form the current L-plan. To the south is a third, much-altered stone building, possibly formerly a cottage, along with later timber buildings.

A single segmental-arch rubble bridge, likely dating to the mid-19th century, connects the house and the farm/stables. It has a flat profile with slightly splayed parapets and semicircular copes.

Materials include mixed rubble with sandstone dressings. The main block is roofed with corrugated asbestos, while the north block has a slate roof. A shouldered stone wallhead stack is present. Windows are timber sash and case, with 8-pane and 12-pane glazing, and doors are boarded timber.
