Description
This 18th-century stone memorial stands on a public road north of Ardvorlich, commemorating an event from 1620. It holds significant local historical importance. The stone is a roughly finished rubble slab, shaped on the front face but left unfinished on the rear. Its design is similar to a memorial stone located further east along Loch Earn, which marks the burial of James Stewart of Ardvorlich. The carving features a simple curvilinear decoration above the inscription, which reads: 'Near this spot were interred the bodies of 7 McDonalds of Glencoe killed when attempting to harry Ardvorlich Anno Domini 1620'. According to local tradition, a group of McDonalds, while raiding the Glenartney Forest, intended to attack Ardvorlich. They were repelled by the house's lady until the inhabitants returned and killed them. The bodies were later discovered during work in the 18th century, leading to the erection of this memorial.
