Description

Balimeanach Farm is a small cottage and outbuildings associated with a sheep farm linked to the Ardvorlich Estate. It is a notable example of a small informal farm from the 19th century, largely in its original condition. The property features a south-facing rubble cottage that is 1 to 1½ storeys high, along with a pair of outbuildings to the northeast that form a small courtyard.

The origins of Balimeanach likely date back to the early 19th century, initially consisting of a simple single-storey longhouse, possibly accompanied by only the eastern range of outbuildings. These outbuildings are built on a slope from rubble and include three single doorways and a series of vents along the eaves, topped with a slate roof. In the later 19th century, the farm underwent extensions, during which the cottage likely took on its current form, with the western half raised to create a dormer storey. The cottage retains the alterations from that period, featuring a single door and piended dormers on the west side, while the east side has one single window and a bipartite window. The northern side of the cottage has limited light, with only two small windows.

During the same period, coinciding with significant improvements at Ardvorlich Farm, a second outbuilding was constructed. This western range is also built on a slope and is slightly more formal than the eastern range, featuring a depressed arch cart entrance made from rubble, along with single doors and slit vents on both the eastern and western elevations.

The interior of the cottage was not accessible during the 2005 survey. The materials used include local rubble for the walls, graded grey slate roofs for the cottage and eastern outbuilding, and corrugated asbestos for the western outbuilding. The cottage has stone gable stacks and clay cans, timber sash and case lying-pane windows, a glazed boarded door, and boarded doors for the outbuildings. The area in front of the eastern range is cobbled.
