Description

24 Ancaster Square in Callander is a two-storey house with a rectangular plan, originally built in the late 18th century, specifically dated 1789. It is part of a row of similar houses that contribute to the streetscape and historical significance of the area, which was designed as the focal point of the planned town of Callander.

The northeast elevation faces the square, featuring a centrally located main door with a marriage lintel above, also dated 1789. To the left of the door is an inserted bi-partite window, while a modern shop front is situated to the right. The first floor has three evenly spaced windows positioned close to the eaves. The southeast gable is attached to 26 Ancaster Square, and the northwest elevation is blank.

At the rear, the southwest elevation includes a gabled outshot with a modern flat-roofed extension at the ground floor, located at the re-entrant angle. The first floor features a pair of small windows, likely from the early 19th century, also positioned at the re-entrant angle.

Inside, the ground floor has been modernized, but the low ceilings and thick walls provide evidence of the property's age, particularly noticeable in the opening to the rear extension. The first floor has noticeably higher coomed ceilings.

The exterior is finished with painted render, and there are painted stone margins around the openings. The house has a 20th-century timber glazed door, while the shop features a timber and glazed door. The windows are timber sash and case, with a plate glass display window for the shop. The roof is pitched with grey slate and has a northwest gable piended, along with a shared rendered ridge stack to the southeast and various cans.
