War Memorial To South, Ancaster Square

The War Memorial in Ancaster Square was erected around 1920 and holds significant local historical interest as it honors the men of Callander who lost their lives in the First World War. It was later modified to include those who died in the Second World War. The memorial is prominently located on the south side of Ancaster Square.

The structure features a circular rubble base that is partly filled with soil for planting. On top of this base sits a cube-shaped rubble pedestal, which has a brass plaque on each of its four faces. Three plaques are inscribed with the names of the town's fallen soldiers, while the fourth plaque depicts a figure in Highland dress carrying a fiery cross. Above this pedestal stands an ashlar column topped with a Celtic capital and an erect shield-bearing lion, which faces northeast towards the former parish church, now the Rob Roy and Trossachs Visitor Centre. Additionally, there is a later bronze ring adorned with Celtic decoration at the base of the column, commemorating those who died in the Second World War.
