Description

This is a well-preserved, single-storey former church hall, dating to 1878. It occupies the footprint of the former Callander Parochial School, which relocated in the late 1870s to a new site on Craigard Road (now demolished). While records suggest the school building was demolished and a new hall constructed, it is likely the present building incorporates earlier fabric. The hall is also listed for its setting within Ancaster Square, a planned 18th-century town, reflecting the area’s subsequent development. It currently houses a delicatessen.

The asymmetrical principal (northwest) elevation features a gabled wing centrally positioned, with a date stone near the eaves. A door is located at the re-entrant angle, leading to a vestibule, which provides access to the main hall. To the right of this wing is another centrally located door that leads to a second vestibule connecting to the main hall and two ancillary rooms containing a toilet and a modern kitchen. A small window integrated into the sandstone doorpiece provides light to the toilet.

The northeastern gable is characterized by a large, centrally placed round-headed window. The southwestern elevation adjoins 8 Ancaster Square (listed separately).

The rear (southeast) elevation appears to contain fabric predating 1878. The arrangement of windows reflects the internal layout of the building: two windows on the far left illuminate the modern kitchen, with a single window centrally-right lighting the main hall.

The interior retains its original layout of timber-lined rooms. The main chamber features an exposed timber hammer beam roof, stained to preserve the wood. Original timber panelled doors and door furniture are present throughout. A small tiled hearth is located in the main hall; the associated stack, likely situated within the gabled wing, no longer survives.

The building is constructed from random rubble 'pudding stone' with chamfered sandstone dressings around window and door openings. Timber sash and case windows with multi-paned glazing are used. Bargeboards are present at the apex of the northeastern gable, supporting a slightly splayed and overhanging upper section of the roof. The pitched roof is covered in grey slates.
