Description
5, 7, 9 Ancaster Square in Callander consists of a pair of houses that are part of a row of simple two-storey rectangular-plan houses, some of which have attics. These houses date back to the late 18th century and are situated in the upper part of the west range on the north side of Ancaster Square. The left house is a two-storey, three-bay structure with an attic, while the right house is a two-storey, two-bay structure. The interiors of the houses have been joined together to create office space. Ancaster Square was designed as the centerpiece of the planned town of Callander in the late 18th century and continues to serve as its focal point.
The principal southeast elevation faces the square and features large modern window openings at the ground floor, with first-floor windows positioned close to the eaves. There is a pend on the left side that corresponds with a similar pend at No. 8 Ancaster Square. The southwest elevation is attached to 3 Ancaster Square, while the northeast elevation is blank, marking the end of the row. The northwest elevation is also blank, except for a pend opening on the far right and four symmetrically arranged ventilation grilles that likely occupy former window openings.
The houses are rendered on all elevations, with the principal elevation featuring painted raised margins around the openings and a painted eaves course. Modern stained timber windows and doors are present throughout. Each house has a pair of canted stained timber dormer windows with canted roofs above the right bays. The roof is pitched with grey slate, and there is an ashlar ridge stack with decorative cans, along with a rendered gable apex stack on the northeast side, also featuring decorative cans.
