Description

8 Ancaster Square is a 2-storey rectangular-plan house that dates back to the late 18th century. It is located on the eastern range of the northern side of Ancaster Square, which was designed as the centerpiece of the planned town of Callander in the late 18th century and continues to serve as its focal point.

The principal northwest elevation faces the square and features a 4-bay layout with a low flat arched pend opening in the right outer bay. The ground floor window in the far left bay has likely been enlarged to increase light in the principal room. The first floor has regularly spaced window openings set close to the eaves.

The northeast gable is attached to 10 Ancaster Square, which was formerly Lesser St. Kessog's Church Hall, while the southwest gable is connected to 4 Ancaster Square.

The rear southeast elevation is marked by small window openings that indicate the house's age, and these openings are irregularly spaced, unlike those on the principal elevation.

In terms of materials, the principal elevation is finished with painted lined render and painted stone margins, along with a timber and glazed porch featuring a piended roof. The rear is constructed of random rubble 'pudding stone' with smeared pointing and has a modern flat-roofed timber and glazed porch. The windows throughout are modern timber stained with a diamond pane motif. The northeast gable has a raised ashlar skew with a scroll skewputt, while the southwest gable features a slightly raised rubble skew. There is a rendered gable apex stack on the northeast, which is attached to the stack of the adjoining 10 Ancaster Square. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slate.

Access to the interior was not gained in 2004, but the owners indicated that the property has been largely modernized.
