Description

Basin House is an Italianate valve house built in 1856 by John F Bateman. It has a rectangular plan with one bay and a piend roof, featuring overhanging eaves on a deep battered podium. The exterior is constructed from squared, snecked whinstone rubble with stugged sandstone ashlar dressings, and the podium is made of random whinstone rubble. There is a base course, prominent long and short quoins, and window margins. The front has a bipartite window, while the rear has a door and the sides have single windows. Stone steps lead to the rear of the podium.

Inside, there is a 19th-century cast-iron operating mechanism. The windows are fixed iron with diamond-paned glazing, and there is a central timber ridge vent. The roof is covered with graded grey Scottish slate.
