Description

The Couligartan Aqueduct Overflow or Outlet, which also incorporates a bridge, was built between 1856 and 1859 by engineer John F Bateman and modified by James M Gale from 1864 to 1867. This structure features an elongated hexagonal masonry basin set into the hillside, with waterfall steps leading down from the center of the southern end. These steps flow under an integral round-arched track bridge to a long, paved outlet channel. The basin is enclosed by cast-iron railings with slightly tapered uprights and splayed tops. It is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone ashlar, while the outlet channel is paved with local whinstone and topped with an over-hanging saddle-back ashlar cope.

The conduit enters and exits through archways on the eastern and western sides of the enclosure, featuring channelled voussoirs and prominent keystones. A steep retaining wall is present to the north, and the curved overflow steps, which have a cast-iron lip, descend under the round-arched track bridge to the south. Sluices are located on each side of the overflow steps. Additionally, a metal security cover was added over the entire structure in 2007.
