Description
The 3 Span Aqueduct in the Duchray Valley was designed by engineer John F Bateman and constructed by Alston & Gourlay between 1856 and 1859, with some alterations made from 1860 to 1864. This 124-yard aqueduct bridge features an iron trough supported by two battered masonry piers and battered masonry embankments at either end. The trough consists of cast iron at the embankment sections and riveted wrought iron in the center. The piers are made of coursed, bull-faced sandstone, while the embankments are constructed from whinstone rubble. The embankments are topped with sandstone ashlar coping. At each end, the conduit emerges from a sandstone archway, and standard Glasgow Corporation Water Works plain cast-iron railings are present. In 2007, security covers and railings were added to the embankment sections of the trough.
