Description

The Southern 4 Span Aqueduct in the Duchray Valley was designed by engineer John F Bateman and constructed by Alston & Gourlay between 1856 and 1859, with some alterations made from 1860 to 1864. This 212-yard aqueduct bridge features an iron trough supported by three battered masonry piers and steep battered masonry embankments at both ends. The trough is made of cast iron at the embankment sections and riveted wrought iron in the center. The piers are constructed from coursed, bull-faced sandstone, while the embankments consist of whinstone rubble. The embankments are topped with a sandstone ashlar cope. At each end, the conduit emerges from a sandstone archway, and standard General City Water Works plain cast-iron railings are present. In 2007, security cover and railings were added to the embankment sections of the trough.
