Description
The Hoish Aqueduct Overflow, formerly part of the Glasgow Corporation Water Works, was designed by engineer John F Bateman between 1856 and 1859 and modified by James M Gale in 1867. It features a roughly rectangular masonry basin set into a hillside, with waterfall steps leading down from the center of the basin to the outlet channel. There are additional steps on the side of the basin that provide access to end piers at the south, which contain sluices flanking each side of the outlet. The basin is enclosed by cast-iron railings supported by slightly tapered uprights with splayed tops, constructed from bull-faced red sandstone ashlar, and topped with a flat ashlar cope.
The structure includes archways at the north and south sides of the enclosure, with channelled voussoirs and prominent keystones. A retaining wall is located to the west, and curved overflow steps with a cast-iron lip lead down to the south. Sluices are positioned on either side of the overflow. A metal security cover was added over the entire structure in 2007.
