Description

Rose Cottage is a traditional single-storey cottage from the late 18th or early 19th century, notable as one of the few remaining examples in the village of St Fillans. It is located at the back of a long garden plot, facing south and offering views over Loch Earn. This cottage represents the original vernacular style of the village, predating the changes brought by tourism and the railways.

The cottage has a simple rectangular plan and was originally designed with attic accommodation. The south-facing main elevation is designed to maximize sunlight and views, featuring a pitch-roofed timber porch that shelters a two-leaf timber door, flanked by window openings. The other sides of the cottage are quite plain, with no openings at the rear (which previously had only a single skylight) and a single opening to the east. To the west, a single-storey byre has been removed, leaving a blocked doorway that is cement rendered. At the time of the resurvey in 2005, the cottage was undergoing work and was roofless.

The boundary walls are made of rubble, with stout, circular plan gatepiers constructed from coursed rubble. These piers are corniced and topped with domed capstones. The materials used in the cottage include random sandstone and whinstone rubble, large squared rubble quoins, and slab lintels for the openings. There are coped, squared rubble gablehead stacks on the east and west sides, with thackstanes and two conical cans on each stack. The cottage was formerly roofed with grey graded slates, but this was in progress as of 2005.
